A big part of my nutrition philosophy is culturally appropriate food and Food Sovereignty. AKA food that is good for the soul! And yes for me that is Smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich .
Feeding our soul with food that we love
This can be food from our traditions, our childhood or food that we grew up on. Eating these types of foods really does help us to be healthier. When you eat something you really like, and really makes you happy- you just feel better. The food satiates you, it helps you to connect with your heritage and past and also puts your mind at ease.
So what does a Smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich have to do with culturally appropriate food? Well I grew up eating a lot of bagels and smoked salmon kinda was a big deal in our house. We LOVED it! In New York, we were all about the pizza and bagels. I am always happy to find a good bagel and cream cheese sandwich or a good slice of pizza.
While some may ask why is a dietitian promoting cream cheese and bagels. I am not promoting bagels and cream cheese specifically. I'm promoting food that makes you happy to enjoy. Food is our greatest connection to earth, and a connection with earth is really important for our health.
And good bagels and good cream cheese definitely make me happy! Bagels from an actual bagel shop that are warm and doughy, cream cheese that is fresh, light and comes in a tub.... that is what I call happiness. Also if you can get flavored cream cheese - get it! I used a sun-dried tomato flavor and vegetable flavor. The sun-dried really gave the sandwich extra sparkle.
And of course I always jump on an opportunity to use our microgreens.
Selecting smoked salmon
For smoked salmon, I highly recommend purchasing wild-caught and/or look for the Marine Stewardship Council seal if you are able to. This label ensures that the way the salmon was harvested did not contribute to further damage to the ecosystem. The Marine Stewardship Council looks specifically at three criteria in the seafood industry and includes: Minimizes environmental impact, ensures sustainable fish stocks, and has effective fisheries management.
Smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado, microgreens = delicious.
Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese Sandwich
- 2 Bagels - recommend pumpernickel!
- 4 oz Cream Cheese - the sundried flavor was awesome, but any flavor of cream would work
- 4 oz smoked salmon
- ½ avocado
- 1 oz microgreens or sprouts
- Toast the bagels and spread the cream cheese
- Add 2 oz of salmon on each bagel
- Then add the sliced avocado and microgreens
- Eat and enjoy!
